The internet has made it easier than ever to share information instantly. But when prepping a large file transfer with sensitive information, it’s important to make sure you have secure file transfer methods and resources in place.
To help you get your data where it needs to go, the following are five ways to share files via secure file upload and similar methods.
Dropbox
One of the most popular ways to share files is by Dropbox. They offer free access up to certain limits and allow you to upgrade to Dropbox Pro or a business account. With the desktop version, you can drag and drop files to Dropbox just like you would into your documents folder. Files are synced to the cloud and available online when you log in to your account. In your online Dropbox account, click “Share” next to the file or folder to generate a link which allows someone else to view and download the file or folder. Dropbox Pro allows you to password protect individual files and folders and set the link to expire automatically.
Secure Shell (SSH)
SSH is a network protocol. It establishes an encrypted tunnel which allows people to log in to a computer remotely. SSH can be used for secure file upload or download including running commands on the computer. If you have a server, you can provide the other party with their own username to log in and access uploaded files.
Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP)
SFTP continues as an extension of the SSH network protocol and is used specifically for transferring files securely. You must have access to a server for secure file upload using SFTP. With a username and password, you can connect to upload or download files. While the connection for file upload or download is encrypted, any documents stored on the server are not secure. It may be important to protect them with a password before you upload them for transfer.
Resilio Sync
Resilio Sync offers the advantage of syncing files directly between two devices versus sharing files in a cloud with services like Dropbox. When both devices are online, files can be shared instantly with a connection secured by 128-bit AES. Resilio is great for a large file transfer and additional devices can be added if you wish to share files with others.
One-time Pad
One-time Pad offers optimal secrecy for secure file transfer. To use it, you must first create a list of random numbers by using your computer or rolling dice. The other party does the same and you both meet to give each other a copy of the pads. When you want to send the other party a file, you combine the random data in the pad and send. The other person can use their copy of the pad to remove the random data to view the file. This process can be tricky to get right, but transferred files are secure.
